Science in Support of National Needs

The Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) directorate supports LLNL's goal to be a premier national security laboratory. Livermore Laboratory's mission is to advance and apply science and technology to

  • Ensure the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear deterrent
  • Reduce or counter threats to national and global security
  • Enhance the energy and environmental security of the nation
  • Strengthen the nation's economic competitiveness

Our PLS mission is to enable the Laboratory to accomplish its primary objectives through excellence in the physical and life sciences. PLS supports the Laboratory missions that fall under global security, stockpile science, National Ignition Facility (NIF), and fundamental science.

  • Physics—Frontier physics research and development for national needs
  • Chemistry—Chemistry in extreme environments and chemical engineering
  • Materials—Materials properties and performance under extreme conditions
  • Earth—Research and development in the areas of atmospheric, earth, and energy sciences
  • Life Sciences—Applied science for human health and national security
